Meta and LG Join Forces to Unveil Cutting-Edge $2,000 VR Headset for 2025 Launch

The Meta Quest Pro's future is shrouded in uncertainty, despite debunking premature cancellation rumors. It faces stiff competition from the immensely popular Apple Vision Pro, as acknowledged by Apple themselves. In a move to up their game, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has reportedly joined forces with LG for a significantly enhanced sequel, as reported by the Korean publication Maeil Business Newspaper. While the initial collaboration revolved around OLED microdisplays from LG Display, it has since evolved to encompass components from other LG affiliate companies, including batteries from LG Energy and various components from LG Innotek.

The anticipated Meta Quest Pro 2, slated for a 2025 release with a $2,000 price tag, marks a significant step up from its predecessor. The initial Quest Pro hit the market at $1,500 but was later reduced to $1,000. Both price points position it considerably below Apple's forthcoming 'spatial computer,' which carries a hefty $3,500 price tag, making them distinct offerings in the VR landscape.

While specific details regarding the enhancements in the Meta Quest Pro 2 (or its potential final name) remain undisclosed, one confirmed upgrade is the inclusion of OLED microdisplays, elevating the resolution beyond the Quest Pro's 1,800 x 1,920 pixels per eye and its 106° horizontal field of view. To put it into perspective, the Apple headset boasts a total of 23 million pixels. Meta traditionally maintains transparency about its VR technology developments, suggesting that more information about this Pro headset should emerge prior to its 2025 launch.

On the more affordable side of the spectrum, Meta is set to launch the Meta Quest 3 this upcoming Fall, priced at $500. However, the company has even more budget-friendly plans in the pipeline – a sub-$200 headset slated for release in 2024. While it could potentially be priced at "$199," it still represents a significant reduction compared to the current $300 price tag of the outgoing Quest 2. Notably, this particular device is not included in the LG partnership
