EU Embraces App Diversity: Apple Unlocks iOS Gates for Alternative App Stores

In response to the EU's Digital Markets Act, Apple has unveiled a transformative update for iOS, the App Store, and browser functionality. Set to roll out with the iOS 17.4 release in March, these changes mark a significant departure from the status quo. Notably, the restrictions on browser choice are being lifted, allowing users to select any browser with the freedom to use its preferred rendering engine. Furthermore, EU iPhone owners will encounter a browser choice screen the first time they launch Safari after installing iOS 17.4, providing a more open and customizable browsing experience.

In a groundbreaking move driven by the EU's Digital Markets Act, Apple is opening its doors to alternative app stores on iOS. Acknowledging the potential risks, Apple is introducing a comprehensive "baseline review" for all apps, regardless of their distribution channel. This review process, employing a combination of automated checks and human evaluation, aims to provide users with clear insights into app functionality before download.

To ensure the integrity and security of the iOS ecosystem, Apple will only authorize "marketplace developers" for alternative app stores, imposing ongoing requirements to safeguard users and app developers. Additionally, Apple is fortifying its defenses against malware by implementing additional protections that prevent the launch of iOS apps found to contain harmful elements.

Despite these strides, Apple acknowledges its limitations in addressing certain risks, such as scams, fraud, and objectionable content, under the new provisions mandated by the Digital Markets Act. Further details on these transformative changes will be shared with Apple customers in March when the revamped system comes into effect.
